Low Bone Availability? You May Still Qualify for Dental Implants

By |February 4th, 2025|Categories: Dental Implants, Videos|

Dental implants are one of the most reliable ways to replace missing teeth. But what happens if you do not have enough bone to support a dental implant? This is a more common issue than you may consider, and there are options available through modern dentistry.

In this blog, we will explore your options for dental implants with bone loss and how Barton Oaks Dental Group navigates this in our Westlake dental office.

Why Does Bone Loss Happen in Your Jaw?

Bone loss in the jaw can happen for several reasons, including:

  • Tooth loss over time
  • Gum disease (periodontitis)
  • Injury or trauma
  • Natural anatomy (especially near the sinus in the upper jaw)

When placing dental implants in the upper jaw, especially near the sinus, there’s typically less bone height available. Without enough bone, the implant may not be stable, which affects its long-term success. This is where specialized bone-building procedures, like the closed vertical sinus lifts and lateral ridge augmentation, come in.

What is a Closed Vertical Sinus Lift?

A closed vertical sinus lift creates extra space for the implant in the upper jaw. This is a minimally invasive dental procedure that gently lifts the sinus membrane and places bone material through a small opening.

What is Lateral Ridge Augmentation?

Sometimes, if the issue isn’t bone height, there may not be enough bone width in the upper jaw to add the implant. Lateral ridge augmentation adds bone to the sides of the jaw, creating a wider and stronger foundation for the implant.

In many cases, the implant can be placed at the same time as these procedures.
